Recognizing a Pediatric Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies can occur at any time and can include a variety of situations. Here are some common children’s dental emergencies that we can treat in our office:

  • Toothache: Persistent pain that does not subside with over-the-counter pain relievers.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: A tooth that has been completely dislodged from the socket.
  • Chipped or Broken Tooth: Visible damage to a tooth, possibly accompanied by pain.
  • Lost Filling or Crown: A missing or damaged restoration that leaves a tooth exposed.
  • Dental Abscess: A severe infection that may present as a painful, pimple-like swelling on the gums.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Injuries to the lips, cheeks, gums, or tongue that result in bleeding or severe pain.

If your child experiences any of these situations, it’s important to contact us immediately for advice and to arrange an urgent visit if necessary.

What to Do in a Pediatric Dental Emergency

Knocked-Out Tooth: Find the tooth and hold it by the crown (the part that is visible in the mouth), not the root. If dirty, gently rinse it with water, but do not scrub. Try to reinsert it into the socket. If that’s not possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a glass of milk or your child’s saliva and bring it with you to the office.

Chipped or Broken Tooth: Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken tooth pieces and bring them with you.

Toothache: Clean the area around the sore tooth thoroughly. Rinse the mouth with warm salt water or use dental floss to dislodge any trapped food or debris. If the pain persists, contact us for further instructions.
