We offer a wide range of treatments ranging from pediatric dentistry to braces for all ages – but sometimes, oral surgery is the best way to help our patients develop a great smile.

Oral Surgery for Children, Teens, and Young Adults in New Braunfels, TX

The word “surgery” can be a little scary for everyone – but don’t worry. In most cases, oral surgery is a far less intensive procedure, usually performed in an office setting under local anesthesia and with very minimal recovery time. Some oral surgeries may be more extensive procedures like jaw realignment or emergency treatment for facial trauma, but most are routine procedures like tooth extraction or wisdom tooth removal.

At other times, a misplaced or extra tooth may need to be extracted as part of your teen’s orthodontic therapy. While orthodontic tooth extraction is not common, it can help to create room to move teeth into alignment if the child or teen has a narrow jaw.

Oral Surgery for Children with Special Needs

As one of the specialist pediatric dentists in New Braunfels & the greater San Antonio, TX area, we’re able to provide attuned care to children with special needs and their families. Whether it’s a complex medical condition, developmental delay, or behavioral needs, our facility, and board-certified staff are able to ensure the highest level of care and safety for your child during their oral surgery.

Gentle Tooth Extractions for Children in New Braunfels

By far, the most common pediatric oral surgery we perform at our New Braunfels pediatric dental office is tooth extraction. Tooth extractions may be necessary to remove impacted wisdom teeth, to promote the development of a healthy smile, due to an emergency, or simply because a baby tooth gets a cavity and a filling is impractical.

By removing the problematic tooth, we can better protect your child or teen’s overall smile for years to come.

In any case, a pediatric tooth extraction is a simple, routine procedure that takes only an afternoon trip to our office to complete. We perform the procedure using local anesthesia, and most patients experience little to no discomfort during and after the procedure. Because most pediatric dental extractions are fairly straightforward, it’s often completed without your child realize that treatment has even started.

For older patients in their teens, wisdom tooth removal may also call for in-house sedation dentistry to help them feel as if they’re napping through the procedure. Removing wisdom teeth before they cause complex problems (such as crowding and infections) can allow your teen to bypass the discomfort and swelling of problematic third molars while they’re away at college.

What to Expect

The experience of oral surgery will vary greatly depending on the specifics of your treatment, but we’ll take care to explain everything to you in detail and answer any questions you may have. If we’re using sedatives to help your child relax, it may be necessary for them to skip breakfast and have their appointment first thing in the morning.

Recovery is usually mild and relatively quick, but it depends on the extent of the surgical procedure. Be sure to let us know of any medical conditions you have or medications you’re taking (including over the counter) – and remember, we’re here to serve as a resource to you through every stage of treatment.
